EMDR- Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing Therapy
Our bodies have a natural healing process which allows us to make sense of and process many different types of experiences. However, sometimes when we experience trauma our natural healing process is impaired and the experience can get "suck" in it a "state dependent" form. That means the thoughts, emotions, body sensations, images, and beliefs about self can get stuck in our system in the same state that we experienced them at the time of the trauma incident.
Our brains work by association and so when something in the present feels similar to some part of a past experience, our brain can light up the past unprocessed experience and bring with it similar thoughts, emotions, and sensations in their more intense state. People often refer to this as being "triggered." When experiences are stored in this unprocessed/ "stuck" form we can experience negative symptoms consistent with PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), depression, and anxiety.
There are different kinds of events that can be unprocessed and causing us negative symptoms. Some may be referred to as big T trauma such as assault, war, death of a loved one, witnessing violence, a car accident, abuse, relational trauma and neglect. However, small t trauma's such as an insult from a beloved teacher, being left out, frequently moving as a child, divorce, financial difficulty. Even if you aren't exactly sure why you are having the symptoms you are having, it's important to know-- you have good reasons for it!
More importantly, EMDR is a type of therapy that can you help process through your current negative symptoms. EMDR is researched backed and highly sought after type of therapy for treating trauma, depression, and anxiety.
