Betrayal & Infidelity

Betrayal Trauma

Betrayal from the one you love is devastating. Betrayal is a loss of trust in a relationship that can come in many forms such as infidelity, emotional affairs, lies about finances, or pornography use if not agreed upon. Research has demonstrated that individuals who have experienced betrayal in their relationship often suffer from symptoms similar to PTSD, such as:

  • anger
  • numbness
  • racing thoughts
  • lash backs
  •  sleep problems
  • changes in appetite
  • depression
  • despair
  • fear
  • changes in the way you view yourself
  • avoidance of people and places

Although what you are experiencing is completely understandable, we can work together in therapy to let go of those unwanted symptoms! We can process through what happened, find peace within yourself, and find clarity about how to move forward. You do not have to stay stuck feeling this way forever!

Betraying partner

You never thought you would be a person who would “cheat” or who would lie to the point of causing a fracture in your relationship. However, here you are. You may be questioning what this means about you as a person or what your future will look like. You might be feeling depressed, anxious, confused, or maybe even a bit relieved if it’s out in the open. Your brain might be telling you, “only bad people cheat!” In reality, there are actually a bunch of reasons why people lie or cheat on their partners and none of them are because you are a bad person! In therapy we work together to gain understanding about your underlying needs,  gain clarity on what you want moving forward, and learn tools for getting there.
